Used Car Inspection Before Export: What To Demand Before Your Vehicle Leaves China

An importer in Kigali or Algiers buys a car that, at the moment of payment, is a set of photographs and one spreadsheet row. The buyer carries every defect, and the seller's word is the only barrier between a clean unit and a costly surprise at destination.

It does not have to be guesswork. A disciplined inspection file, produced before loading, removes most of that uncertainty. Here is what a complete file contains, and how to read it. It also pairs with the paperwork side, covered in our guide to China's 2026 used-car export rules.

Why remote verification is now standard

Flying in to inspect every unit does not scale, and for a first order of one or two cars the trip rarely pays for itself. Inspection moved to documentation instead: video, diagnostic data and instrument readings sent before the invoice is settled. Suppliers who produce this on demand win repeat business; those who cannot trade only with buyers who accept blind risk.

The six evidence sets to request

1. VIN and build data

A photograph of the VIN plate and the stamped chassis number, plus the VIN string as text. Both must match each other and every document. A VIN decoding to a different trim, year or body style than advertised is the clearest sign of a mismatched file.

2. Service and maintenance history

Dealer or manufacturer records show odometer progression, accident repairs and major component work. The shape matters more than the length: regular intervals, a plausible kilometre curve, continuity through the years of use. A two-year gap deserves a direct question before you pay.

3. Paint and body readings

A handheld thickness gauge returns one number per panel. Uniform readings across doors, wings and roof mean original paint; a panel far above its neighbours means filler or a repaint. Ask for numbers panel by panel, not a summary.

4. Diagnostic scan

An OBD report should list stored and pending fault codes across every module, not only the engine. Pending codes matter most, because they often preview a fault that has not yet lit a warning lamp. Request the full report with codes and freeze-frame data, plus a screenshot of the mileage as the scanner reads it.

5. Undercarriage photographs

Corrosion, kerb damage and exhaust repairs live underneath, where a sales photograph never looks. Ask for shots on a lift in daylight: sills, subframe, suspension mounts, exhaust, wheel arches and boot floor.

6. Cold-start video walkaround

One continuous, unedited video: cold start, dashboard with the odometer visible, exterior walkaround, interior, then a short drive. Continuous footage beats a dozen selected clips, because it cannot hide the moment a warning lamp lights.

How to read the evidence for red flags

An odometer reading below the service record's last entry, or falling between two dated entries.

Panels whose thickness readings are two or three times their neighbours.

A VIN on the plate disagreeing with the chassis stamp or the paperwork.

A diagnostic report limited to the engine module, or codes cleared shortly before the scan.

Video that cuts between shots, or that begins with an engine already warm.

When to bring in an independent inspector

For one standard unit the six sets are usually enough. Order a third-party inspection when the order is large, when the car is a higher-end model, when there is structural repair history, or when the destination market requires a conformity report. Insist on an inspector with no commercial relationship to the seller, and on receiving the report directly.

Documents that must match the car

The inspection is only half the file. Registration, invoice, export licence and any conformity certificate must carry the same VIN, engine number and model description. A mismatch stalls the shipment at the port of loading, not at destination, when the container space is already booked.

Write the checklist into the contract

The strongest protection is procedural. Agree in the purchase order that the file arrives before the balance payment, that it contains the six evidence sets described here, and that payment releases only after your review. Regular exporters work this way without friction. Knowing how to phrase the request is half the battle, as we set out in the seven fields of a good import enquiry.

The model families we handle most often, among them Corolla, Lavida, Passat, Golf, Emgrand, Tucson and T-Roc, have the deepest service-record ecosystems, which makes verification easier. Ask for the file, read it carefully, and the car at your port will be the car you agreed to buy.
