Petrol, Hybrid, PHEV Or EV? Matching A Drivetrain To A Market in 2026

Most sourcing conversations start with a model. They should start with a drivetrain, because the drivetrain decides almost everything that follows: what fuel or power the end customer can actually find, which workshop can service the car, what the spare parts list looks like in year three, and how the unit moves through customs. Our current list carries all four options at once, which makes the comparison unusually concrete.

All four drivetrains on one list

Petrol turbo - Volkswagen T-Roc 300TSI, Tharu and Passat; Geely Binyue L; MG5; Trumpchi GS3.

Full hybrid - Toyota Corolla, Corolla Cross, RAV4 and Frontlander in their hybrid trims.

Plug-in hybrid - BYD Seal 05 DM-i and the second-generation Qin PLUS DM-i.

Battery electric - BYD Sealion 6 EV, alongside the electric SUVs already in our yard.

Petrol still wins where charging is thin

Where the grid is unreliable or customers drive long intercity routes, a 1.5 or 2.0 litre turbo stays the safest first import. Fuel is available everywhere, every independent workshop can service it, and the parts catalogue is the cheapest to stock. It is also the least demanding on paperwork: no battery test reports and no state-of-charge rules to prove before loading. If your buyers are importing for the first time, this is where they should start.

Full hybrid: the answer when fuel prices bite

The Corolla, Corolla Cross, RAV4 and Frontlander hybrids never need a plug. They recover energy under braking and ask the customer to change nothing about their habits, which is why they keep appearing in enquiries from markets where fuel costs have risen faster than charging infrastructure. One practical point to plan for: a hybrid still carries a high-voltage battery, so it is still declared as dangerous goods at sea, but under the vehicle entries for combustion-engined cars rather than the pure lithium-battery entries.

Plug-in hybrid: a compromise that needs a plug

DM-i models make sense where the buyer's customers mostly drive short urban cycles and can charge overnight at home or at a depot. Run one without charging and you are carrying battery weight for no benefit. Before quoting, ask what charging looks like in the destination city, and ask your customs broker how plug-ins are treated locally, because that answer differs from country to country. Dealers who sell on total cost of ownership rather than purchase price get the most out of this segment.

Battery electric: lowest running cost, longest shipping file

An EV is the cheapest car to run and the most demanding to ship. Lithium-battery vehicles have moved onto their own UN entries for sea transport, they need a UN 38.3 battery test report behind them, and the state of charge at loading has to be documented and capped at 30 percent. None of that is exotic for an experienced exporter, but the shipping file is longer, and a buyer importing an EV for the first time should let the exporter handle the dangerous goods declaration. Choose an EV when the destination has a real charging network and a dealer who can support it.

Stock or forward order depends on the drivetrain

Availability is not uniform across the list. Some trims sit in the yard for immediate release, while others are quoted as forward orders with a lead time; the hybrid crossovers are frequently forward order, and the electric SUVs in stock tend to be single units rather than fleets. Ask for the status of the exact unit before promising a delivery date to your customer, because an in-stock unit and a forward-order unit are two different conversations with two different timelines.

Five questions before you choose

What can the end customer fuel or charge within twenty kilometres of home?

Who services this drivetrain locally, and can they actually buy parts?

What is the three-year cost of ownership, not the purchase price?

What does the shipping file require - battery report, state of charge, dangerous goods declaration?

Is the trim in stock, or is it a forward order with a lead time?

Send us the destination market and how your customer actually drives, and we will tell you which of the four drivetrains fits - and which units are available now.
